This is the index for Vanity or Vice’s single-ingredient files: the same claim → mechanism → evidence → burden → verdict method used everywhere else on this site, run against one active, one lipid, one peptide, one trend ingredient at a time. No entry here treats an ingredient’s résumé as proof of what a specific bottle does. Concentration, vehicle, and the finished formula still have to show up and do the work.

Ingredient-List Literacy

The ingredient list confirms identity. It does not confirm concentration, formula quality, or penetration — and there is no visible 1% line on the package, however hard the internet has tried to draw one.

Exfoliants, brighteners, and the acids doing real clinical work.

Pigment & acne

Azelaic Acid

Randomized trial data for acne, papulopustular rosacea, and certain pigment issues — a genuine evidence base many trend ingredients still lack. Concentration and vehicle still decide whether a given bottle earns it.

Exfoliation

Glycolic Acid

The smallest, most-studied AHA. Strong evidence for texture and brightness — and a real irritation and barrier-compromise risk that the shelf tends to understate.

L-Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C)

The ingredient has credible photoaging and pigment evidence. The retail decision is harder: concentration, pH, vehicle, packaging, oxidation, and finished-product testing decide how much of that evidence survives the bottle.

Retinoid alternative

Bakuchiol

One well-designed head-to-head trial against retinol is real evidence. It does not make bakuchiol an equivalent “plant retinol” across the board — and being non-retinoid does not establish pregnancy safety.

Topical Tranexamic Acid

Several randomized trials support topical TXA for melasma, including comparisons with hydroquinone. One vehicle-controlled trial did not show superiority, which is exactly why concentration, route, formula, and sunscreen belong in the verdict.

Barrier lipid

Ceramides

Not a fancy humectant — mortar between the cells, alongside cholesterol and free fatty acids. Real evidence for hydration and barrier support; no tidy rule that “ceramide” always beats a plain emollient.

Niacinamide

A genuine multi-tasker with human data behind barrier support, oil control, and tone. Four times the concentration is not four times the result — 20% is a label number, not an efficacy multiple.

Hyaluronic Acid

A real water-binding polymer with randomized human data behind hydration and elasticity. Not a syringe you can apply yourself — the “filler in a dropper” pitch oversells what a topical does.

Beta-Glucan

More direct human topical evidence than most 2026 trend ingredients — including a split-face post-laser trial. “Beta-glucan” is a family name, though; source and molecular weight change what a specific formula can do.

A microbial “extremolyte” with randomized human trials, including atopic-dermatitis data, behind hydration, barrier function, and tolerability. Not sunscreen, and not automatically better than hyaluronic acid.

Hypochlorous Acid

The antimicrobial chemistry is real and the tolerability can be useful. The strongest human record is antisepsis and wound-oriented use; direct evidence for a consumer HOCl mist as a primary acne treatment is much thinner.

Topical copper-peptide evidence is a formulation question. Injectable GHK-Cu is a different delivery and safety question with limited human data. One molecule name does not make those routes interchangeable.

NAD+ is real, important cellular biology. The “longevity” language on the bottle arrived well before the controlled human trials for passive topical NAD+ cosmetics did.

Volufiline

A plausible adipocyte mechanism and a patent record — plus one small, manufacturer-generated breast-tissue study. Nowhere near the evidence “filler in a bottle” implies for facial volumizing.

Beef Tallow

A legitimately rich emollient and occlusive people can genuinely love on dry skin. The human evidence does not establish it as a superior barrier treatment, an acne therapy, or an eczema or psoriasis treatment.
